Our Guiding Inquiry:
At Hawthorne, we are examining how issues with self-regulation and anxiety affects students’ ability to engage with and persist in academic and specifically, mathematical tasks. Recognizing that a child’s ability to stay focused and manage stress is closely tied to academic performance, we feel that providing both emotional and academic support to help our students build confidence and achieve success in math is where our focus should be.
We will be focusing on strengthening both numeracy and SEL (social emotional learning) skills, which are foundational to students’ overall success.
Curricular Goal:
At Hawthorne, we are in year two of working with the Math Minds program. As a Math Minds school, we are committed to continuing with the Math Minds program to help students build essential numeracy skills and establish a solid mathematical foundation.
Core Competency Goal:
In addition to numeracy, we also recognize that many students are facing challenges with self-regulation, which can hinder their readiness to learn and their engagement in class. By prioritizing SEL (social emotional learning), we aim to support our students in developing the emotional and behavioral skills necessary for a productive learning environment.
Connection to Vision 2030:
Our school goals are closely aligned with our district’s Vision 2030.
We will be collaborating as a school community to enhance mathematical knowledge and achievement while also fostering students’ social-emotional learning and self-regulation.
