School Goals

Our Guiding Inquiry:

At Hawthorne, we are examining how issues with self-regulation and anxiety affect students’ ability to engage with and persist in academic and specifically, mathematical tasks. Recognizing that a child’s ability to stay focused, regulated and manage stress is closely tied to academic performance, we feel that providing both emotional and academic support to help our students build confidence and achieve success in math is where our focus should be.

We will be focusing on strengthening both numeracy and SEL (social emotional learning) skills, which are foundational to students’ overall success.

Curricular Goal:

At Hawthorne, we are continuing to work on improving our overall numeracy skills.  We are in our third year of working with the Math Minds program.  As a Math Minds school, we remain committed to continuing with the Math Minds program to support students in developing essential numeracy skills and building a solid mathematical foundation.

We have also identified a need to improve student success in the area of fact fluency.  To address this, we have implemented a fact fluency program that is being used in the majority of our classrooms.  Through this work, we aim to increase students’ confidence in math while strengthening their overall numeracy skills.

Curricular Goal Update (May 2026)

We have seen much growth and success over the course of the school year including:

  • All classes participating in Math Minds curriculum
  • Growth in student confidence overall in math
  • Increased success for many students in fact fluency through daily practice

Core Competency Goal:

In addition to numeracy, we also recognize that many students are facing challenges with self-regulation, which can hinder their readiness to learn and their engagement in class. By prioritizing SEL (social emotional learning) regulation strategies, clear and consistent behaviour expectations and school wide community engagement, we aim to support our students in developing the emotional and behavioral skills necessary for a productive learning environment.

Core Competency Goal Update (May 2026)

We have experienced a lot of forward progress with our school initiatives this year including:

  • Professional development opportunities focused on SEL strategies and aligning our vision as a school
  • Developing, updating and implementing our schoolwide behaviour matrix with common language and expectations used by staff and students
  • Creating and celebrating monthly themes which focused on important virtues for our community
  • Continuing to implement positive reward and celebration strategies such as our popular school wide Helping Hands program

Connection to Vision 2030:

Our school goals are closely aligned with our district’s Vision 2030.  We will be collaborating as a school community to enhance mathematical knowledge and achievement while also fostering students’ social-emotional learning and self-regulation.  We are committed to continuing this goal in our upcoming 2026/2027 school year.
