March 16th Newsletter

Mar 16

We hope everyone has a wonderful Spring Break. We have lots of great things to look forward to when we return. Please remember our first day back is Tuesday, April 3rd.

Ready Set Learn

The Delta School District will be hosting a Ready, Set, Learn event for Ladner children who will be turning 3, 4 or 5 in 2017.  The event will be held on April 11th from 9:30 – 11 am at the Delta Manor Education Centre. This is happening in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Children and Family Development and the Ministry of Health Services. These organizations have joined forces to celebrate literacy and assist you in the teaching role that you play for your child. British Columbia’s Ready, Set, Learn program recognizes that families need positive connections with the school system and community agencies that provide early childhood development resources, support, and services.

This session will begin with brief introductions followed by hands-on-learning opportunities for the children that will model fun and effective literacy strategies. We will also include a brief explanation of the kindergarten program and discuss strategies that will help to prepare your preschooler for elementary school.  Those who attend will receive a free book, a package of materials and enjoy a presentation by children’s entertainer, Will Stroet.

Starting with Stories at Hawthorne Elementary

All new Kindergarten students, and their parents, are encouraged to attend at least one of the sessions in order to become familiar with the school and Kindergarten teachers.

Three Sessions: April 10, April 17 and April 24 . Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 to 2:45 in the Hawthorne Library.

Please RSVP to the office by Wednesday, April 4th. Each child will receive up to 3 new books.

Track and Field

As soon as we get back from Spring Break, we will begin our Track and Field Season.

Track and Field practices are about to begin to prepare our participating students for the May 7th Regional Track Meet.  We will meet with interested students for an information session and our full schedule of practices will begin the first week in April.
Please note the following points regarding Track and Field:
  • Gr. 4-7 are invited to attend running practices held from 8-8:50 am on Wednesday and Friday mornings.
  • Students are required to attend 80% of the practices in order to participate in the Regional Track Meet (there may be some exceptions due to extenuating circumstances).
  • All students who meet the attendance requirement will be placed into an event for the regional meet.
  • There will be a Ladner Mini-Meet hosted later in April at DSS that will feature a 60m race for Gr.4/5 students and a 100m race for Gr. 6/7 students.
