Happy New Year!

It has been a great start to 2018, and lots of wonderful things are planned for the new year. Teachers will be sending home their Term Two Previews this month and student-led conferences are coming up on February 21st and 22nd. Basketball is beginning for the Grade 6s and 7s; Kindergarten classes have been taking skating lessons; Lego Club is up and running; Board Game Friday was a huge success last week; and Family Games Night is on Thursday, next week. All of this is possible with thanks to our wonderful parent, student and staff volunteers.

New on Staff

We’d like to introduce and welcome our new staff members. New to our Learning Support Team is Mrs. Ferguson, and she will be with us on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  We also welcome back Mrs. Perkins, she will be providing French or Music support in many of our intermediate classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We’d also like to welcome back, Mrs. von Schulmann, our new VP, who will also be teaching Kindergarten and PE.

Family Game Night – Thursday, January 25th

Our PAC has organized a Family Game Night for Thursday, January 25th, 6:30 – 8 pm. Parents and students are invited to our Hawthorne Gym for an organized game night. A variety of strategy and thinking games will be available for participants to explore at their own pace. There is something for all ages and everyone is welcome to attend.

Lego and Games Lunch Hours

On the wet and windy weather days, Hawthorne has been hosting a Lego and Games club in the library:

Mondays:     Grade 4/5 students

Tuesdays:     Grade k/1 students

Wednesdays: Grade 2/3 students

Thank you to the teachers who are helping to supervise: Mrs. Ratzlaff, Mrs. Mack, Mrs. Retallick, Mrs. Williams, Ms. Cherry, Ms. Sundaran, Mrs. McLellan.  As well, special thanks to our Grade 6 and 7 volunteers who set up and help play the games.

In addition, we had a fabulous “Board Game Friday” last week. Lots of students came to the gym to meet with their friends and play a variety of board games.

Kindergarten Registration – Thursday, February 15th

Kindergarten Registration across the district begins next month.  Our Hawthorne Registration Day will be Thursday, February 15th, from 9:30 am. For more information please see our district website: Kindergarten Registration Information

Student Drop Off and Pick Up

Thank you to everyone for their patience at pick up and drop off times.  Most school days, the traffic congestion clears within ten minutes of the 3 pm bell. Just a reminder, before and after school there is no parking in the round-about/Fire Lane.  In addition, the raised area by the yellow barriers and school garden is reserved for daycare and school buses, before and after school. Also, if you are going to leave your vehicle, please park in a designated parking spot. Adhering to these rules, helps keep our students safe and the traffic moving more smoothly. If you are going to be late picking up your child, please have them wait at the office. For their safety and supervision, we direct all children who are waiting for pick up, past our regular pick up time, to the area in front of the office.
